What Can We Help You Find?

We want to alert you to an increase in phishing scams targeting library users via fraudulent text messages. These messages may claim that a library card has expired, that there are unpaid fines, or that a patron’s account will be suspended unless immediate action is taken. They typically include suspicious links and attempt to collect personal or account information.

TLN does not send library card expiration notices or account warnings via text message.
TLN text messages are limited to Hold Pickup and Coming Due notices only.

Legitimate TLN messages may include a link to the official “My Account” page of the catalog:
This link is secure and allows patrons to check due dates, holds, and other account activity.

Examples of Recent Phishing Messages:

  • “Your library card is expired. Visit [fraudulent link] to reactivate now.”
  • “Unpaid fine detected on your library account. Immediate action required.”
  • “Library access suspended. Confirm your identity here: [fake login site]”

Additional Caution: Voice Cloning Risks

Be aware that some phishing scams may ask recipients to call a number and speak or verify information verbally. This may be an attempt to collect voice samples for potential use in voice cloning or other fraudulent activity.
Always verify suspicious requests through official library contact channels.

Safety Reminders

  • Do not click on suspicious links in unsolicited text messages.
  • Do not provide personal or library account information via text.
  • Legitimate library communications will never request sensitive information in this manner.
